World Environment Day 2026: Hayleys Fabric Group’s Commitment to Climate Action and a Sustainable Future

August 4, 2026

As the world comes together to mark World Environment Day 2026 under the inspiring theme “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.”, the global focus turns toward accelerating climate action and rebuilding humanity’s relationship with the natural environment. Climate change continues to be one of the defining challenges of our generation, demanding urgent action from governments, industries, and communities alike.
At Hayleys Fabric PLC and South Asia Textiles Limited, sustainability is more than a corporate responsibility it is a strategic commitment deeply embedded into the Group’s operations, innovation, and long-term vision. As a leading textile manufacturer in Sri Lanka and South Asia, Hayleys Fabric Group continues to demonstrate how sustainable manufacturing can drive both environmental progress and industrial transformation.

We are Leading Climate Action Through Science-Based Targets

The Fabric Group remains on track to achieve its SBTi near-term targets. In FY 2025/26, the Group achieved its planned linear GHG emission reduction target, reflecting continued progress in implementing climate action initiatives and advancing its decarbonization journey.

Hayleys Fabric Group has committed to reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 42% and Scope 3 emissions by 25% by 2030. These near-term targets represent the company’s dedication to achieving measurable emission reductions within this critical decade for climate action.
Looking toward the future, the Group has also pledged to achieve Net-Zero emissions by 2050, targeting a 95% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions and a 90% reduction in Scope 3 emissions. Through continuous operational improvements, renewable energy integration, process optimization, and responsible value chain engagement, the Group is steadily progressing toward these ambitious climate goals.

We are accelerating the Transition to Renewable Energy

Renewable energy remains one of the key pillars of Hayleys Fabric Group’s climate strategy. Today, approximately 73% of the Group’s total energy mix is derived from renewable energy sources, marking significant progress from the 69% baseline recorded during FY 2022/23.
The Group has made substantial investments in renewable energy infrastructure, including a 4.6 MW rooftop solar installation and a further 3.6 MW solar expansion at South Asia Textiles Limited. In addition, the Group has introduced floating solar technology and integrated biomass energy into its manufacturing operations to further reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
Notably, South Asia Textiles Limited currently utilizes 100% biomass for its thermal energy requirements, significantly lowering operational carbon emissions while supporting cleaner production processes.
These initiatives not only contribute to climate mitigation but also strengthen energy resilience and support Sri Lanka’s broader transition toward sustainable industrial development.

We are protecting Nature Through Carbon Sequestration and Ecosystem Restoration

In line with the World Environment Day theme, Hayleys Fabric Group recognizes that climate action and nature conservation must go hand in hand. Beyond operational sustainability initiatives, the Group continues to invest in protecting and restoring natural ecosystems that contribute to long-term environmental resilience.
We maintain a 20-acre Eco Reserve and adjacent buffer zone, which serves as a protected green ecosystem supporting biodiversity conservation and carbon sequestration. This reserve currently stores approximately 7,800 tCO₂ of carbon stock, demonstrating the important role Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) can play in addressing climate change.
Further strengthening environmental stewardship efforts, the Group also supports blue carbon initiatives through external collaborations such as the “Life to Our Mangroves” project. These mangrove restoration initiatives contribute to coastal ecosystem protection while enhancing natural carbon sinks capable of absorbing and storing atmospheric carbon.

We are building a Sustainable Future Through Responsible Manufacturing

As climate challenges intensify globally, we continue to integrate sustainability into every stage of its operations. From renewable energy investments and emissions reduction strategies to ecosystem conservation and climate governance, the Group remains committed to driving positive environmental impact across the textile value chain.
This World Environment Day 2026, Hayleys Fabric Group reaffirms our commitment to creating fabrics for the future while protecting the planet for generations to come. Inspired by nature and guided by science-based climate action, the Group continues its journey toward a cleaner, more resilient, and sustainable future.
